Forth & Co

Well here we are in 2023. We hope that all our readers had a great time over the festive season. Here’s to you all having a happy, and above all, healthy year. The first scone of 2023 comes to you courtesy of Forth & Co in our home town of Falkirk. Perhaps, at this point we should just mention that it’s quite a sinful one!

We came into town early and decided to have breakfast out. Forth & Co has recently opened having replaced Johnstone’s Bar & Bistro which we reviewed back in 2016. We thought we should give this new place a whirl. In my teenage years this was the Temperance Cafe, a place to hang out with all the other cool cats. The coolest cats (such as myself) met upstairs on the balcony where we could look down on ordinary folk and talk about girls, politics and the price of milk. Okay, mostly girls … certainly don’t remember any in-depth discussions on scones! Six decades later there are some pretty obvious changes but in essence it’s amazingly the same.Internal view of Forth & Co

Sinful

What we are trying to explain is that we came here for breakfast and did not expect scones to be present so early in the day. But there they were and after coffee and a lovely breakfast roll we found ourselves tucking into a scone … can’t help ourselves! And it was still early morning! Not absolutely sure what the correct time for scone scoffing is but we do know it’s not this early. Hopefully, we’ve not upset any of our more delicate and genteel readers!

A scone at Forth & CoHalf expecting to be struck down by a thunderbolt we cut our scone in half and proceeded to spread the Irish butter and the French jam … argh! There was also a generous bowl of whipped cream. It was all rather nice though fairly obviously not freshly baked on the premises. Service was very efficient and friendly but there’s some work to be done if they want a topscone award.

Forth & Co is part of the Bow Hospitality chain of about ten similar restaurants around Scotland. It was quiet when we arrived but thankfully it was busy by the time we were leaving at 11am. We’re sure it will be just as successful as its predecessor.Internal view of Forth & Co

The Falkirk Televisor

No need to remind avid readers but this building was the scene for the world’s first ever TV broadcast. It was conducted by local boy John Logie Baird as he broadcast an image of a dummy named Snooky Bill (no comments please) from one room to another using his ‘televisor’ invention. It did work, though the pictures were extremely fuzzy! The equipment is now in the local museum.

Extremely fuzzy could well describe the political picture for 2023. Both here in the UK and in the US, politicians seem to be held to ransom by far right extremists. Fortunately we have Harry and Meghan to take our minds off all of that.

Harry’s book ‘Spare’ has occupied the news for the past week. Our own family seem like paragons of virtue compared to the Royals so it is perfectly understandable that Harry wants to put some distance between them. Considering what we the public subject the Royals to, it is hardly surprising that they are dysfunctional. Amidst all the people struggling with utility bills and food banks the tone deaf Charles is busy with the Queen Somesort organising his coronation. A brand new eatery like Forth & Co is definitely more worthy of celebration.Logo of Forth & Co

Bob & Berts revisited

Still carless so we remain pretty much tethered to home.  Our car is currently on Harris in the Outer Hebrides where the previous post hailed from. We are being inundated with photos of our granddaughters enjoying fabulous weather and swimming on Hebridean beaches.

Meanwhile, back in Falkirk, with no particular desire to use public transport just yet, we were not feeling the same degree of joyous unfettered freedom. But sensing a bit of a scone urge, we quietly made our way to our own local High Street. And when we got there Bob & Berts was the only cafe with any available outside seating. So it was to be “Bob & Berts revisited”. Last time we reviewed this place it was our very first scone of 2019.

Car doors

Back then we appraised our 2018 year of sconing. The big political news of the year had been a member of the Royal family closing her own car door. The media was full of it. Some congratulatory but others full of righteous indignation at the sheer unabashed brashness of it all. Since then, of course, the responsible person has been banished from whence she came and since then all Royal car doors have remained free of scandal. Phew!

Snagging lists

Momentarily, we also turned to religion. God, we reckoned, must have looked with dismay at the mess He had made of His snagging list over two millennia. We felt, however, that He would have taken a crumb of comfort from a whole bunch of countries banding together in a spirit of cooperation to form the EU. He would have been proud! Oh dear, what will He be thinking now?Bob&Berts sign

Last time, we gave Bob and Berts a bit of a hard time for not selling us a raspberry ripple scone and importing their jam from Oregon. That’s a massive carbon footprint for a wee pot of jam. Nashville Fruit CompanyWell, this time they only had cherry scones but the jam was still the same. We have to conclude that they are either impervious to justifiable criticism or they don’t read  allaboutthescones.com. Incredibly we suspect it’s the latter. Heyho, we wouldn’t really want anyone serving American jam in Scotland to be reading our blog anyway!

A scone at Bob&BertsWe wish our “Bob & Berts revisited” experience had been an improvement on the first visit but it wasn’t. Our shared cherry scone was almost inedible. It may have been fresh on a certain day last week but it certainly wasn’t now. We left half of it. Stale scones, scooshie cream and American jam … what’s to like? Well, the coffee was actually quite good and the place itself has a nice hipsterish vibe. Not enough to make us rush back though.

Poetic scones

We are spoiled when it comes to refreshments because our coffee correspondent keeps us supplied with delicious Cat’s Pyjamas coffee from Henry’s Coffee Company. Sometimes we even find the odd anonymous package of trout on our doorstep and suspect it might be the very same correspondent. Among his many talents, he is renowned for his recitals of the poems of Robert Burns. He couldn’t bear for our antipodean corespondents to be the only ones waxing lyrically about scones so he’s penned a response.  As expected, his ditty has an appropriate Scottish flavour.

Great tastin scone yir so elusive.
Tae find yir likes, one hikes ower Scotland’s hills and glens and islands.
Thru toons and villages, some wi’ sheds, some wi’ telephone boxes.
Some oft visited by wee ‘Willy Winkie’ and Pat and Billy.
Yir crumblin crumbs and so soft centre cause chaos on my taste buds.
Yi’ll taste much better when Scotland’s independent.

Normality?

Don’t know if this can be taken as a sign of things returning to normal after COVID? Remember the £5.36 I had in my pocket since March. Remember it mysteriously went up to £6.36. Well, now it’s gone. It’s now just 56p. No idea what’s happened but it’s definitely suffered a severe shock. It’s certainly not due to me being unduly profligate but I’ve obviously had to stick my hand in my pocket for some reason. I would, however, caution the world against taking this as conclusive proof a resumption of normality.

Courtyard Coffee Shop

You may remember that in our last post from Antonios Deli we narrowly avoided a potentially tricky contretemps over the last scone. All ended well, however, and we came away with a scone recommendation for Denny. Hence today we have ended up here at the Courtyard Coffee Shop. Denny (pop 7,000) is only a couple of miles from our home yet it’s somewhere we almost never visit. We are only here today because a) it was a beautiful winter’s day and we opted to take a drive up the Carron Valley and b) because we were in pursuit of that scone. There are a number of reasons why this town does not figure highly on our radar … or anyone else’s for that matter.

Carbuncle of the Year

Over the last 40 years the town has had the misfortune of finding itself surrounded by a triangle of motorways. The effect is that the town, which used to be on direct routes of communication, is not any more. It has a bypassed look about it and it’s extremely easy to avoid. Some of the pubs have closed and, perhaps as a direct result, even the police station has gone. The folks who live here, however, are a plucky lot. In 2010, to draw attention to the poor state of the town, they asked for it to be considered for the Carbuncle Award as the most dismal place in Scotland … they won! Normally towns live in dread of these awards but not Denny. Not sure if it had the desired effect or not.

Cattle markets

Anyway if it wasn’t for the wonders of SatNav it’s debatable whether we would ever have found the Courtyard Coffee Shop. Turns out it’s on a farm – the Home Farm to be precise and the road it’s on is called Drove Loan. Drove Loans wLogo of Courtyard Coffee Shop, Dennyere the routes used by drovers to walk cattle from all over Scotland to the main market in Falkirk. Driving cattle in this way was a major activity in these parts for almost 200 years from 1750 onwards.

This particular Loan would have provided access to Falkirk from the west. We also live on a “Loan” but ours would mostly have seen sold cattle moving south to England. The Home Farm seems to consist of a rather untidy jumble of buildings of which the Courtyard Coffee Shop is but one. There is another containing a beauty salon. It typifies perhaps the way farmers have been obliged to diversify in order to survive.

Luxury scones

For being a bit off the beaten track it was buzziA sc one at the Courtyard Coffee Shopng when we arrived. The staff were very friendly and helpful and soon had us both sorted with a first class lunch. Because we had eaten quite a lot the decision was to share what was termed a “luxury fruit scone”. Think the “luxury” bit meant it came with cream. Our expectations of the first topscone of the year were dashed, however, when we realised that the scone had probably been baked yesterday. Not bad but some way of the standards required for our highest accolade. It was a pity because this is really a great place. Other than the scone everything was excellent. Because the clientele seemed to know all the staff as well as everyone else in the place, the noise of chat and laughter was deafening. But we love that sort of noise.

Dare to be different?

Most of the noise elsewhere this week has been about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Goodness knows, when the monarchy decided to admit someone with more than half a brain, trouble was almost inevitable. The fact that Meghan was an articulate  American divorcee ‘of colour’ with a highly successful career didn’t help either. It’s incredible to see the media that have been saying “how dare she come over here with all her freethinking ideas” swing round to ” how dare she even think of going off somewhere else”! Good luck to them in their big bid for freedom. They will certainly need oodles of luck to disentangle themselves from the wholly unnatural strictures of Royal life. If they can realise their admirable wish to become self sustaining, … even better.

Internal view of the Courtyard Coffee ShopPerhaps we should be  thinking of setting the rest of the Royals free as well. Is it morally justifiable for us as a society to do this to a family? Is it cruel or is it cruel? Surely we should not be allowed to hold a family to ransom like this . We expect them to do our bidding unquestioningly just because we pay them billions. Okay, they are a tourist attraction for people to gawp at but how many readers would like to be a tourist attraction? Thought so. Whatever happens it’s pretty obvious that their is little room for someone with the ambitious free thinking attitudes of America in Britain’s starched monarchy. Pity really, it was the best chance for the Royal family to drag itself into the 21st century. We’ve still got Kate, however, baking scones, giving birth and saying nothing … proper Royal.

While we watch Harry and Meghan’s plight being played out in the glaring media light you should get yourself along to the happy noises of the Courtyard Coffee House. Don’t forget your SatNav!

Bob & Bert’s

A happy and healthy New Year to you all. We hope you will come with us on our continuing sconological research expeditions in 2019.

Looking back at 2018

What were the highlights of 2018 for us? Well, we collected data on over sixty scones and twenty one of them received topscone awards. We think that’s a pretty good batting average. Some were posh like One Devonshire Gardens in Glasgow, the Connaught in London and Knockinaam Lodge in Galloway. Others were not as posh but great nevertheless e.g the Drift Cafe in Northumberland and Fenwicks in Linlithgow.

We still had great experiences with those that did not receive our highest accolade. The Sundial Cafe in Limekilns, the Scotsman Grand Cafe in Edinburgh and the Pop-up Café in Pittenweem were all wonderful in their own way. Stand out amongst them however, just for location if nothing else, must be the Kerrera Tea Garden on the Isle of Kerrera and the Forth Belle. In fact our 2018 scones all had something to offer even if they were not great in themselves. We certainly enjoyed the whole blogging year.

Fifteen 2018 posts contained telephone box news but our favourite has to be the K3 near Jamesfield Farm. … it was a privilege!Illuminated sign for Bob & Bert's, Falkirk

2018 politics

Ooooo! The big news for us was that a member of the Royal family had closed their own car door. Okay, okay it was a brash American recent addition to the family who didn’t know any better. We felt it was significant. Is it for the better? Will she be able to teach other members of the family? Well in spite of the potential for legions of royal door closers being thrown on the scrap heap, we think it’s a sign of real progress. One of very few in 2018.

Brexit, of course, has to be a highlight or a lowlight depending on your point of view. It’s confusing, so to make sense of it all we turned to religion. Eh? Let us explain. If we accept for a moment that, a couple of thousand years ago, God created the Earth in a week. And we also accept (or hope) that He is still working through the snagging list. Always felt He should have taken two weeks. Then we can probably assume that He saw the two World Wars, with 80 million fatalities, as snags with capital ‘S’s. The evolution of the EU however, even with all its faults, must have made Him look down in astonishment, maybe even with a wry smile. All these countries coming together in a spirit of harmony and cooperation … amazing! Then just as He was thinking “Gee, I didn’t do such a bad job after all”, along comes Thatcher spreading seeds of doubt and then Cameron to finish the job. If He has hair He can’t have much left now. At the end of the day, however if He thinks the EU is a great idea that’s good enough for lowly us to think we should Remain!

Enough of 2018, what about 2019?

Internal view of Bob & Berts, FalkirkFor our first scone of 2019 we didn’t stray very far. Only as far as our own High Street in fact. The object of our attentions was a flashy upstart newcomer, Bob & Berts. It adds to the plethora of cafés already on the High Street. Turns out it’s a new chain set up in Northern Ireland (Norn Iron as the locals say) by one Colin McClean, a former geography teacher from Portstewart. They have eighteen cafés over there and have just opened three in Scotland. Considering the competition from the big boys likes of Starbucks, Costa and McDonalds this is a bold venture indeed. Is it too bold though? If our experience is anything to go by, we think they will go from strength to strength. It is definitely ‘different’, with a kind of American hipster vibe. The louder than usual piped musac seemed to be a mixture of Mumford & Sons and the Scissor Sisters. Getting the vibe?Nashville Fruit Co jam at Bob & Bert's, Falkirk

Raspberry Ripple

Our experience was mixed however. We asked for the last raspberry ripple scone they had. It had a kind of pink macaroon thingy on top. Why not start the year with a dangerous scone after all? Everything was fine. However, by the time we had got our tea and coffee, we were informed that our scone had been sold to a another customer. It was still sitting there staring us in the face! Their system however meant that someone ahead of us in the queue had already bought it. A scone at Bob & Berts, FalkirkBut it’s still there!? Takes a bit of figuring out. They would actually allow us to purchase an apple and cinnamon scone, a cherry scone, a plain scone or a fruit scone. The eventual decision was a fruit scone but the raspberry ripple one was still there … arrgghh! Probably a lucky escape. Anyway, having survived all this trauma we took a seat in a couple of large comfy wing-backed leather chairs and set about sharing our fruit scone. We enjoyed it, however, the butter was from Ireland and the jam was from Nashville, Oregon? Don’t mind the butter, it’s an Irish company after all … but the jam?? That’s a big carbon footprint for jam! No topscone. We consoled ourselves however in the knowledge that, had they actually sold us the raspberry ripple scone, it would have fallen into the weird scone category and not won an award either. This new addition to our High Street  is just that little bit different. We also have a huge soft spot for N. Ireland where we lived for seven years, so we wish Bob & Bert’s all the very best for the future.Sign for Bob & Bert's, Falkirk

News

Not much news at this time. The mighty Apple seems to be struggling a bit because of Trump’s trade war with China. Trump isn’t worried, he thinks that 2019 is entirely down to him … the highest numbered year ever … higher than Obama’s!

ps: Having raised your curiosity we are now feeling guilty. We may return to the raspberry ripple scone another day. Watch this space.
